Recently, Sarah and I celebrated our eighth wedding anniversary. When I mentioned the milestone to another pastor friend, he responded by saying there were three danger points in marriage: the seventh year, the eleventh year, and the thirtieth year. Those, he explained, were the points when most marriages ended in divorce. Now, I'm not sure he's exactly right: I think the current trend of "starter marriages" (one or two years in length) might push the average down a bit, or at least give us a new danger point to contend with. What I can say is that the vast majority of my pastoral counseling touches on or revolves around marriage troubles.
So, I was interested when I saw this
article from Friday's New York Times and a follow-up blog
post from one of my favorite blogs, MockingbirdNYC. In the NYT article, a wife recounts how she dealt with her husband's desire to leave. The follow-up blog relates her "long-distance love" to the gospel.
I commend them both to you: if you're married, this might give you some ideas for handling future conflict; if you're not married, this will give you an insight into what makes for a successful relationship.
